Our Mission
It is our mission to help people become the best versions of themselves using the martial arts as a vehicle. We offer far more than just kicking and punching. Our program teaches vital life skills such as confidence, discipline, focus, and responsibility.
Meet Master Lockett
Master James Lockett holds a 6th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and has been training in the martial arts for over 33 years.
His path into martial arts started the way it does for a lot of kids — old Kung Fu movies, Bruce Lee, The Karate Kid. That interest stuck with him all the way through high school, and he finally stepped onto the mat for the first time as an 18-year-old college student. He’s been training ever since, including years as a national-level competitor.
Before opening his own schools, Master Lockett spent 15 years as a classroom teacher at the middle school, high school, and university level, and holds a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). That background shows up everywhere in how he runs class — how curriculum is structured, how he reads where a student is developmentally, and how he adjusts his teaching to the way each student actually learns best. Running a martial arts school, to him, is still fundamentally teaching.
He opened his first school in Buda, Texas in 2017, and took over Championship Martial Arts – Austin in September 2020.
Our School’s Story
Our Bratton Lane location has been serving the Wells Branch community for over 20 years. It operated under a previous master instructor before Master Lockett took over in September 2020. The school ran as United States Taekwondo from 2017 until 2025, when it was rebranded as Championship Martial Arts – Austin — reflecting the same instruction and community families have trusted for two decades, under a new name and a renewed commitment to professionalizing the training experience.
Part of the CMA Network
Championship Martial Arts – Austin is part of the CMA network, a group of schools committed to world-class customer service and to raising the standard of professionalism across the martial arts industry. That affiliation means our families get the benefit of proven systems and standards behind their training experience — not just one instructor’s individual approach.
